Vision:

To be the leading association in the region in promoting microfinance.

Mission:

Advance the microfinance sector to enable social and economic development and inclusion by providing a strong common platform and excellent services.

AMIK supports the development of strong and effective Kosovo-based microenterprise programs to assist underserved entrepreneurs in starting, stabilizing, and expanding businesses.
Generating income and employment, small and micro enterprises account for the majority of economic activity in Kosovo.  By providing access to microcredit and business training, microfinance institutions (MFIs) in Kosovo play a major role in the economic development of the Region.

In an effort to enable MFIs to better support the needs of Kosovo’s small and micro businesses sector, and in order to facilitate growth in the industry, several MFIs in Kosovo go together to form AMIK.  The founding members of AMIK are Kreditimi Rural i Kosovës, Besëlidhja/Zavet Microfinance, Agency for Finance in Kosovo (AFK), FINCA-Kosovo,  and Kosovo Enterprise Program (KEP).

Currently, there are eleven members in AMIK:

  • Agency for Finance in Kosovo (started as a Project of Mercy Corps)
  • Besëlidhja/Zavet Microfinance (developed by World Relief)
  • FINCA-Kosovo
  • KEP Trust (started as Project of the International Catholic Migration Commission)
  • Kosovo Grameen Missione Arcobaleno Micro Credit Fund
  • KosInvest (a Project of World Vision)
  • Kreditimi Rural i Kosovës (formerly ADIE)
  • QELIM Kosova
  • START (developed by Islamic Relief)
  • Meshtekna
  • NBFI LESNA

Recognizing the opportunity and value of learning together, member institutions articulated the need for a microfinance association that would coordinate different joint activities, advocate for their needs, and establish a code of best practices. The MFIs in Kosovo have cooperated extensively over the past few years in laying the groundwork for the microfinance sector and for an Association that will lobby for the interests of MFIs as a collective entity. Currently AMIK has three different focus areas:

Advocacy and Policy -Advocacy is a key function of AMIK. Under its advocacy mandate, AMIK promotes an awareness of and a commitment to best practices among donors, government bodies and microfinance practitioners in Kosovo. Under AMIK, MFIs have a platform from which they can speak with one voice.

Best Practices – AMIK facilitates the exchange of best practices with a particular emphasis on encouraging financial transparency among its members. Members present their financial and portfolio reports in a way that clearly reflects the activity of the institution and promotes transparency, which protects against misuse of donor funds or straying from the social mandate implicit in microfinance. AMIK works with its membership to build a strong credit culture by reinforcing sound microfinance practices and professionalism. AMIK is working on the development of a code of best practices, which will be crucial for long-term sustainability, and stability of the microfinance sector in Kosovo.

Coordination – AMIK coordinates activities such as joint trainings, exchange visits between other established MFIs in the Region, and other activities as requested by the member institutions.

AMIK works closely with its membership base to define and develop ongoing strategies for the future.
